President Obama is in many ways beginning to look like just another cold calculating professional politician. Or as Chicago Tribune political columnist John Kass pointed out in June, no one should be surprised by some of Obama's actions -- he is after all a product of Chicago politics. And embracing Bush policy and trying Khadr under a military commission, he's likely making Harper very, very happy. Unless the Supreme Court steps in and upholds Khadr's Charter rights and international law.
Khadr was a child at the time of the alleged crimes and so his incarceration in a military prison was contrary to international law. On top of that Khadr (again, remember he was a child) was tortured by the Americans, also breaking international law and Khadr's Charter rights (as his lawyers pointed out today).
The Harper government has been abdicating its responsibility from the beginning of this fiasco. Khadr should have been brought home and tried in the juvenile system here. If Harper won't uphold the law let's hope the courts do.This won't be justice if we don't prosecute Khadr under the rule of law. It will be state sponsored vigilantism.
