I just attended my first Launch Party Vancouver and I've got to say it was a fantastic event. One of the really great things about LPV8 was that by bringing in entrepreneurs from other west coast cities it helps build a sense of regional community. Now if only local/provincial/federal politicians would pay attention maybe some of this energy could start to realize significant benefits.
As for the entries it was a nice mix of consumer and business oriented applications. Having demo stations where you could actually touch and feel the applications and ask questions was a real plus and made the event for me. I love seeing new stuff and I wasn't disappointed.
In many ways it's no surprise that Hootsuite won. It's a great solution for leveraging twitter for social marketing (and really could be used for other SCRM use cases. My favourite features are the discussion threads and link analytics. Speaking of analytics though they need to do more here -- partnering with a Sysomos or Radian6 would go along way to filling out this capability.
My favourites? Best Value Proposition (Recession Category) goes to Yowza!! Very simple value prop that takes all of the pain our of using coupons. Now if only they could allow you to share them (iPhone P2P capabilities for example) that would make it even better. And for phase two maybe they could consider becoming the Loyalty Bank of America so that we could make better use of our Air Miles and other loyalty programs.
Best business application goes to Gist. Aggregating email, tweets, blog posts, and other social media into a single location can really help for anyone doing relationship selling. And isn't that everyone? It will be interesting to see where they go with meta data -- it could be really valuable in determining social context to support sales efforts. It could also be a great tool for building teams internally.
Groove was also kind of interesting SMB solution for making email more social -- aggregating and threading email discussions, tagging, context based calendaring were all great features. I really want to take a deeper look at this. Combined with their document collaboration features this could be a very powerful platform for mobile for SMB.
Really looking forward to the next one.
