John Baird claims that it's not just a technicality that's killing Toronto's plan to upgrade it's outdated and inadequate street car fleet with a fleet of new light rail streetcars. Baird claims that the only projects eligible for funding are those that create local jobs over the next two years. The fact that the project with Bombardier would create 5,700 manufacturing jobs in Ontario, Quebec and Manitoba. If it doesn't meet some narrow criteria (that is to create construction jobs) then it isn't worthwhile. This is beyond stupidity and confirms people's perception of government as inflexible and incompetent. Investing in modern transit technology is exactly the type of thing the government should be doing to reinvigorate a manufacturing sector that has been devastated by the meltdown of GM and Chrysler.
