I got an invitation from Canada2020 the other day inviting me to the latest in their speaker series. The event is being held in Toronto on February 28 and the speaker is Brian Day and the topic is "Putting Patients First: The Only Solution for Canada's Health Care System".
For those not familiar with Dr. Day, he is the current President of the Canadian Medical Association. He has also been one of the leading advocates of enabling private health care in Canada. Day has opened a private clinic in Vancouver and his goal is to allow those who can pay (either through private insurance or self-financing) to jump the queue. Day puts on a superficial facade of supporting the Canada Health Act but his real goal is to erode the current system by diverting resources (both health care providers and money) away from the public health care system and into for profit private health care.
Private health care has not worked anywhere it has been attempted. Day's attempt to undermine the current system has been enhanced given his current standing. There are serious challenges with our health care system but opening the door to private health care is not the answer. To steal a phrase from Winston Churchill: Public health care is the worst form of health care except for all the others that have been tried.
That Canada2020 has given Day a platform to put forward his agenda without at the very least inviting a speaker to rebut his argument is extremely disappointing. It certainly makes me wonder if they warrant the "progressive" label they use. I encourage you to e-mail Tim Barber, the organizer at email@example.com or call Canada2020 at 1-866-895-5297. If we are going to have a debate on health care let's make it a real debate not the one-sided affair being presented by Canada2020.
